Differences between Elliptical and Treadmill Workout

We all know why we want to lose weight. But, do we all know that a primary goal of any exercise routine is to get your heart rate into a target zone and keep it there for a period of time.
The target zone is calculated by first obtaining your maximum heart rate by subtracting your age in years from 220. Your target heart rate is then 60% to 80% of the maximum heart rate. Because this is so critical, many treadmills will come with a heart rate monitor to display the heart rate on the machine.

If your treadmill does have this capability, you can purchase an inexpensive heart rate monitor from most department stores, health stores or online.

While both elliptical workouts and treadmill workouts primarily are designed as aerobic workouts for the lower body, there are distinct differences that may make one, the other, or a combination of the two the best choice for you.

Elliptical Workout

An elliptical workout is primarily different in that there is much less impact on the feet which is good for people with joint, knee, back or hip problems.

An elliptical workout works the upper and lower body at the same time, giving your heart rate a faster climb and helping your legs, back shoulders, chest and arms. You can also add variety by changing the pedal direction to backwards and working on the quadriceps muscle.

Treadmill Workout

Treadmill workouts are great aerobic exercises and many people prefer them to elliptical machines. If your only purpose is to simulate walking, jogging or running and you don't care about a total body workout, it is a better choice.

Treadmills offer controllable intensity levels that can be increased as your fitness progresses. Treadmills can give an actual incline to your workout. It is not as intense as elliptical training, but still gives good exercise while burning fat.

Treadmills still remain the most popular fitness equipment but as more people try elliptical workouts, the elliptical trainers will probably overtake the treadmills. Both workouts will build bone density, burn fat, promote cardiovascular health and increase energy levels as long as they are done on a regular basis.

The saying that you get what you pay for is especially true with either the treadmill or elliptical trainer. It makes sense to get quality equipment that will last. Some bargains can be found online, just be sure you are comparing exact same models.

Make sure you decide on the equipment that is right for you and you will use it more often, lose weight and be healthier.

  1. The Sole E25 is a very good value, but you need to keep in mind that you will not be getting anything special or extraordinary with this bottom-end model. When compared to other ellipticals within the same price range, however, the Sole E25 elliptical trainer does have some features that aren’t commonly found at this price level. Therefore, it is an excellent value for someone who is ready to start working out at home.
